My Voice Is Not Being Heard, 2013
Multi-Channel Video Installation & Paper Sculpture
MFA Show 2013, SAIC
Thesis

My artwork takes a critical look at human communication. My project began with the tracing and motion-tracking of lips, lip-reading, voice and hand gesture while talking, and I became fascinated with the visualization of gesture and speech.
In my thesis project, My Voice Is Not Being Heard, a performer reads out a statement and the visual trace of the voice is generated by physically transforming the voice’s vibrations into light, writing phonetically in time and space. These voice visualizations are treated as a kinetic alphabet, and are displayed live in a video grid and also as tangible paper sculptures.
The voice shapes write across screens as calligraphy, and the traces loop like echoes of the sound. The video and paper sculptures represent the skeleton of the voice, and the voice becomes visible and tangible, but also fragmented.
My thesis project is the outcome and continuity of the Mark and Trace in Communication Project.
